Who I am Matters

WRIT 340
Professor Hansen

I was born in Fresno, California on October 22, 1996, to two doctors. After eight years in California, my dad's practice took us to Scottsdale, Arizona where I have resided since. With both my parents working as doctors I was expected to become a doctor and continue the tradition. Thankfully, my parents were open-minded and allowed me to explore my options. I enrolled in a summer business program while in high school and I was convinced to study the subject ever since. My family is extremely motivated but the means in which my parents and I solve problems differ. My parents typically dedicate themselves to solving a problem in the fashion that has proven to be the most effective. I often look to solve problems in a manner different than what is expected because I appreciate what can be learned from approaching problems from different angles. This has provided mixed results but I can always take something impactful away from the problems I attempt to solve. My parents are also very stubborn which I believe is one of my main character traits. This makes arguments very intense but typically we can reach an amicable agreement.
One thing that has stuck with me throughout my life is my love of sports. Sports have profoundly shaped my direction in life and my choice to attend USC has only strengthened my love of athletics and its role in our culture. I am a business administration major with a minor in sports media studies hoping one day to become the general manager of a professional sports team. They have profound influence on an organization and I have many ideas I would love to implement within a team in any league.
This is not an easy goal to achieve and requires profound dedication and innovation. One of my idols, Theo Epstein, the current general manager of the Chicago Cubs, exemplifies this idea and acts a motivator for myself. He was stuck with a terrible team that had gone over 100 seasons without a championship all while being haunted by the Curse of the Billy Goat. Despite the odds, Epstein worked tirelessly to find new ways to make his team better. He did not sign high-end free agents. Instead, he looked to players who would fit well with the team and play together. Two seasons ago, Epstein ended Cubs' championship drought and cemented himself as a Chicago legend.
In terms of an animal, the tiger has always been one of my favorites. Partially, due to its orange color but also because they are an incredible animal. Also, what's better than a tiger cub? Some species of tigers were taken off the endangered list which was great news. An impactful moment I had with a tree came when I still lived in California. My grandparents had a large one in their backyard and would routinely climb it when I visited. I grew with that tree and watched it change through the seasons and years. I have not thought about that tree until this assignment and it is a cool feeling looking back on those fond memories.

  1. Hello Brett! I found your relationship with your parents, who are both doctors, very interesting. It's great that they have allowed you to explore your passions while challenging you with debates. I think that is one of the best balances to surround yourself with while entering young adulthood because it pushes you to be more well-rounded.

  3. I'm glad you were able to explore your options and end up in a field that you feel passionate about. My brother also hopes to be the general manager of a professional sports team, so maybe you two will meet some day haha. Do you have a dream team you want to manage?

  4. Hey Brett, you seem to be a very motivated person and I have no doubt that you will go far. I like how you chose the general manager of a sports team as a role model! An interesting choice, but definitely a great example of how far motivation will take you.

  5. Hey Brett! I find it interesting that your parents are stubborn yet they allowed you to pursue your own path instead of becoming a doctor. Did you ever consider becoming a doctor before you went to the business summer program?

  6. Hey Brett! I love how the assignment also brought you back to some hidden yet profound memories of your youth. I can't imagine how special of an experience it was to watch the sun and the sky change throughout the year from the top of a tree.

I took a sports media class last semester with Alan Abrahamson. It was a truly remarkable class that reminded me the importance of the role in sports in our world.
